Office 2003 student and teacher edition

Find a friend new or old who has the right CD and is willing to lend you the CD. Unlike the very "old" DOS days when there was a signature file on the floppy, there is nothing unique on the CD to identify it. The uniqueness is provided via the Product key you use to activate it. Ask at work if they have an installation CD you can borrow. There are often old disks "hiding" in storage rooms. Try to find a local "PC Computer Club". There is almost certainly a geek or three with disks you could borrow.

If you could legally use it to save money on upgrades then all businesses would do that and that would be all that stores would sell. Any situation in which you would want to move from the student edition to a business edition would imply that the student edition was never legally licensed and therefore you didn't actually own it to upgrade.

The only exception to this is if you are a student and graduate and then want to use your old student edition for business - but you have to purchase the full version at this point. A business can do nothing with a student edition of office but give it away to a student or teacher and even they are required to only use it in certain fashions.

Thanks Scott. That was informative. I exactly dont remember but I think I did something wrong upgrading unknowingly few years back to a person I know. IBM makes a product based on open office that is free as well, they call it Symphony.

It's worth a look too. In the event that you want Office and not and are not planning to go the OpenOffice route it is legal under the MS Licenses to install one version back so you can legally install the equivelent version of Unfortunately MS Office is not an inexpensive product for corporate use.

They discount heavily for the student edition but the license is very clear on non-commercial. The last things you want is to get is a compliance audit from Microsoft or the Business Software Alliance, they are not pleasent experiences.

You know what they say about great minds. This is one of those facts of MS licensing that many people don't realize so I try to share when I can. I spent a great amount of time reading about MS licensing on their different products just for the sake of knowing.
