As with most places in Madeira that are not on the sea front it is up a hill so the return journey from the city on foot will involve some exercise. However, there is a free courtesy hotel bus that runs during the day from and to the hotel and seafront. Taxis and bus services are readily available but the walking will do you good.

The hotel facilities are excellent. The outdoor pool is free to all guests. There is also a spa with treatments which my partner tried and thought really good. The breakfast offer is generous and caters to all tastes. Half board is available and the food is good quality and plentiful. Thankfully chips or french fries are not on offer! We had the half-board package. The rooms are spacious with a small balcony and nice bathroom with decent pressure shower.

Air conditioning and Wi-Fi round of the package. Finally the key feature has to be the warm and helpful staff who made our stay a very relaxed and enjoyable week. Suite Hotel Jardins Da Ajuda. We booked a little apartment at the Musa D'Ajuda hotel complex as we've stayed there before and it was sufficient. However, nothing has been done to refresh or even maintain the facilities since and this time it was really showing.

First thing, one of the doors to the balcony had a large crack across it which we reported immediately to the reception only to be told that 'they will look at it' and the other would not lock reported this to the reception to get a 'we'll send someone to have a look at it' back.

We couldn't leave anything outside our locked suitcase as the room was not fully safely lockable. There wasn't a kettle or a coffee machine so the only way to make a cup of tea was to boil water on the little hob in a large saucepan.

Worst thing was the fridge though. The little freezer would not close which caused all our supplies we bought for the whole week to be frozen solid over the first night. A large proportion of the food became ruined as a result. When we reported this to the reception, we got the standard 'we'll send someone to look at it' back. At that point, there had not been anyone to look at the door that would not lock so we requested a replacement room. After a bit of persistence, we got given a slightly smaller room despite the hotel being empty so we moved our luggage into there.

This room had a coffee maker so that was a benefit. I would strongly suggest taking your teenage children on holiday to this hotel - the rooms still have an analog TV set and the reception insist on giving you the remote for it which didn't work in our room, which was just as fine as there's no international channels on the TV anyway.

We thought it was rather droll. Generally speaking, we would not come back to this hotel - despite its excellent location and local atmosphere - until it's been fully refurbished and brought up to at least acceptable standards without putting the guests and their belongings in jeopardy.

Hotel Girassol - Suite Hotel. Stayed here as a family of 4 over half term and I'd just quickly start by hopefully reaching out to some lovely people from Scotland who my little boy really took a shine too - if you're reading, we missed you on your last morning but thanks for the kindness with Joe. Same to Riley's family, stay well folks. Hotel review: for a last minute week away, I think we got pretty lucky. Good sized room jnr suite , but the sofa bed was very creaky and noisy.

Nice balcony, great location for walks to lido area and also the Marina and what I'd describe as a town centre. Lots of local bars and restaurants. Nice pool area but not enough sun beds, likely not helped by the distancing requirements.

But it was awkward to see people struggling to get a bed at just gone 9am. Food in the pool area for lunch and snacks was good; it's not always clear but you can order toasties, burgers, chips from 11am to noon them 4pm to 6pm, with lunch served separately from a small buffet with some occasional show cooking from 1pm to 3pm. Breakfast and dinner is served in main restaurant, which has some outside tables on the main street which are good for people watching etc, and temperature was still warm in the evening when we visited.

Food selection ok for a week, but we like to eat out despite being all inc anyway. I would say the guys working the main restaurant work really hard and are a credit to the hotel. Reception area staff very efficient and friendly. Terrace bar again efficient, quite often bringing your drinks out to you, and generally a friendly bunch. My main criticism is that while it's all inc, drinks are only available 11am to 11pm. Everywhere else I've been is at least 10am to midnight.

So that felt a bit lacking At night we'd order a few drinks to take and drink on the balcony past 11pm Was in bed at 11pm most nights!! I'd also stay here again happily. Thanks for a great break. This was our first time in Madeira and we had a fantastic week.

The hotel is in a great position for walking into Funchal or to the Lido area. The tour buses cannot get down to the front of the hotel but, it is only a 50 metre walk from the drop off point. The reception is open and very spacious, check-in posed no dramas and we were soon in the lift up to our room On entering the room you could sense the cleanliness, everything neat and tidy. We were pleasantly surprised that we had a sea view and a small balcony.

The room was on the corner of the hotel second floor and was twin-bedded. There is plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. In the wardrobe there is a small fridge and a safe. You are charged for the safe, at the time of writing, 10 Euros for the week. You have to pay a 40 Euro deposit for the key which, is returned if you return the key. We found the beds very comfortable and the air-conditioning worked well. Downstairs in the main hotel you have spacious areas for sitting and relaxing, the bar area a spa area and the sun terrace with an outdoor pool.
