If you are expecting Windows standard interface, you will be disappointed. This is not Windows Me as some have called it in reviews -- not even close. The OS is completely stable and responsive on an old Lenovo that does not even have Windows 7 drivers.

Windows 8 installed with no missing drivers. Installed office and Visual Studio along with a few apps. Everything runs smoothly and response is speedy.

Pros: This software will make your hardware run better in many ways. My wireless Internet connection is even a little better, believe it or not. Everything Windows has done in the past is the foundation for this OS. I had issues when I started running the preview a few months ago.

I love Win 7, but I now have to admit this is an improvement. As far as I have seen Win 7 bit drivers work fine with Win 8. Cons: There is a learning curve, but I was surprised how quickly this OS became intuitive. I miss the Start button less every day, but I suspect the backlash might make Microsoft reconsider. There is a minor bug or two I trust Microsoft will fix before Win 9 see below. I have made a couple of calls to Tech Support, which I presume is in India. They are still playing catch-up with this OS.

Overall Review: If you listen to those who put down this OS, you will be missing an opportunity to get this at an introductory price. It will cost much more in a couple of months. I've been working with computers for over 20 years. Microsoft has made some OS missteps, but I do not believe this is one of them. I think Microsoft made a huge mistake getting into the hardware business with the Surface, but Windows 8 is outstanding.

Microsoft is not Apple, and I'm afraid they are going to find this out the hard way. Then again I don't know if Apple post Jobs is going to continue to move forward as in the past Upgrade from Windows 7 bit is great. Win 8 will let you do a clean install from the "upgrade" just like Win 7 did, no problem.

Overall Review: With a little effort you won't need the visit the modern interface if you don't want to. The effort is similar to past Windows setups.

Win8 has ruffled a lot of feathers, but I never really used the Start Menu in Win7 too much due to search functions and since those carried over to Win8, it's much of the same.

I thought I would just post the information in a new thread since the actual answers to this question are sometimes buried in numerous pages of things that didn't work or other me too comments. That means if you are downloading onto a 32 bit machine, you will get 32 bit Win 8, if it's 64 bit machine, you will get Win 8 64 bit.

If you have either of these problems this is what you can do to get Windows 8 working properly and also create your bootable media. If you have access to a windows 7 64 bit machine you can download using the installer from MS and should have the option to create media on DVD or USB and simply use that to install Win 8 64 bit on the machine you are trying to upgrade.

You may get an error that the files were copied successfully but could not make the device bootable. You now have a working version of Win 8 64 bit. You will get the 64 bit version although it won't tell you anywhere which version you are getting. Once you've completed the download you should have the option now to create media.
